SCHWA is Peter Spafford on piano and vocals, Richard Ormrod on too many instruments to list, and chanteuse Jacqui Wicks. Schwa have played numerous arts festivals and last year toured Threshold, a collage of music and words, around West Yorkshire libraries. Here they preview Bird Songs, their forthcoming performing piece about the wonder and mystery of feathered creatures – and throw in some old favourites.

Playful, but not frivolous; intricately constructed songs that constantly surprise whilst sounding like you’ve always known them. It's good to know that music can still bring new joy. (Pancakes for Davros)

Vivid lyricism and authentic vocals blended with fantastic, eclectic arrangements. (Testament)

There’s a northern ambience to the whole thing. Listening to it in Switzerland, this feels to me like its particular character. (Merz)

New Parlour? Fairport meets Threepenny Opera? Schwa take poems by a range of poets dead and alive and set them to intelligent, emotive music. Their three albums to date are available on bandcamp.

Support on the night will come from the brilliant young musician Danny Kelly plus friends.

And at 9am on Thursday 21st June, in anticipation of "A Lark", we have invited Linda Jenkinson to take a group of people on a special Bird Walk around East Leeds.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Parking is very limited at the Centre but there are plenty of on-street options and good public transport links—http://www.chapelfm.co.uk/contact/

And how much does it cost?
We try to keep all our events at Chapel FM as cheap and accessible as possible. This is a Pay-what-you-can gig. We like to make as many as our events at Chapel FM truly affordable so we ask you to decide what you can afford to contribute £2, £5, £8... We won't take any money upfront but you can reserve yourself a ticket through eventbrite and then make your contribution on the door on the night. All moneys raised goes straight back into supporting our work at Chapel FM.
